JOB TITLE: Physical Therapist
DEPARTMENT: Rehabilitation Services
JOB SUMMARY: Provides and directs Physical Therapy services to patients, including evaluation, treatment, program planning and implementation, related documentation and teaching staff, patients and caregivers. Functions under physician’s orders. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduate of an accredited degree program in Physical Therapy.
Personal Job-Related Skills: Knowledge of physical therapy equipment. Effective oral and written communication abilities.
Licensure, Registry or Certification: National Certification Examination for Physical Therapy. Texas Physical Therapy License.
Experience:
- Prior Work Experience: One year experience as a Licensed Physical Therapist preferred.
- Technical Training: BCLS certification.
Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate to extended periods of standing and walking. Repeated bending, stooping and reaching. Pushing and pulling up to 300 pounds and carrying up to 50 pounds and heavier lifting in transferring or supporting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
A. Under the supervision of an physician, performs or supervises physical therapy treatments on patients.
- Provides Physical Therapy services to patients and initiates referrals when appropriate and in accordance with Rehabilitation Services Department procedures.
- Conducts screening of patients per request to determine need for intervention/treatment.
- Evaluates patients to obtain data necessary for treatment planning and implementation and conducts specialized evaluations as indicated.
- Determines/establishes patient-specific goals/treatment plans and reviews them with PTA/Rehabilitation Tech as appropriate.
- Monitors patient-specific goals/treatment plans and reviews them with PTA/Rehabilitation Tech as appropriate.
- Provides care appropriate for the neonate and the pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
- Assesses and interprets data on neonate and the pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients’ status to identify patients’ requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.
- Develops appropriate home or community programs to maintain/enhance the patient’s performance in their own environment.
- Provides clinical data in a timely manner concerning safety and functional/equipment needs for discharge.
- Reviews the quality and appropriateness of the total services delivered and of individual Physical Therapy programs for effectiveness and efficiency, and reports the findings to the Rehabilitation Services manager if necessary.
- Adapts treatment to meet the individual needs of the patient.
- Delegates treatment to the PTA and Rehabilitation Tech in accordance with established standards of practice, department procedures and staff skill levels.
- Supervises PTA and Rehabilitation Tech in accordance with State Practice Act guidelines
B. Provides information on Physical Therapy services.
- Interprets and communicates evaluation findings to patient, family and other team members, including other therapist, nursing and physicians
- Directs treatment plan and communicates modifications to the PTA/Rehabilitation Tech as indicated.
- Participates in patient, tech, caregiver and staff education.
- Provides in-service education to members of the facility staff and community at large as required.

C. Plans and Organizes Physical Therapy services
- Establishes individual patient schedules in conjunction with patient and other team members to accommodate patient’s individual schedule.
- Develops treatment plans by identifying a problem list, including short and long-term goals and methods to achieve identified goals.
- Organizes work area and work in progress to minimize delay, interruption and substation to established patient schedules.
- Coordinates treatment plan with PTA, Rehabilitation Tech, patient and caregivers.
- Provides/recommends/fabricates/fits assistive devices or other equipment, trains patient, caregiver and appropriate staff in the use of and application of devices.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS:
- Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
- Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
- Interacts with Medical Staff members on a continuous basis.
- Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.
- Follows the safety guidelines and policies of the Medical Center.
- Other duties assigned by manager/supervisor.
