JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant (Part-time: 3 days per week)
DEPARTMENT: Rettig Family Health Care
JOB SUMMARY:
Medical Assistants work in hospitals and medical clinics and handle basic clinical tasks and perform clerical duties. They perform under the direction and supervision of a physician and/or a mid-level provider. They assist in providing nursing patient care, prepare records and maintain a clean environment.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: High School graduate or equivalent.
- Licensure, Registry or Certification: Registered Certified Medical Assistant
- Personal Job-Related Skills: Must have good communication skills and be caring toward patients. Willing to work under pressure. Be understanding and answer all questions of the patient as simply as possible, to the best of his or her ability with physician direction. Use discretion while maintaining patient confidentiality. Be in good health and have a positive personality.
Experience:
- Prior Work Experience: Clerical and medical terminology experience preferred.
- Technical Training: CPR certification
- Minimum of 200 clinical hours of training preferred.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Duties of the position require moderate physical activity. Extended periods of standing and walking. Bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
Performs and documents laboratory tests in a clinic setting.
Performs urine dip stick for any abnormal findings.
Collects blood by venipuncture and/or finger sticks using aseptic technique for HCT and capillary blood glucose. (After approval of Medical Lab Director/M.D.)
Performs urine HCG pregnancy test as directed.
Obtains and accurately labels specimens for laboratory tests.
Performs swab testing for cultures
Provides clinic services and care for patients.
Takes and records blood pressure readings, weight and length measurements.
Assists physicians and prepares patients for various types of examination and procedures.
As directed by a physician, administers specific drugs or medications, either orally or by injections and observes patients for reactions.
Instructs patients and family members regarding treatments and follow-up care.
Applies or changes dressings as requested.
Assists with minor surgical procedures performed in the clinic.
Performs basic life support skills in an emergency situation.
Maintains patient’s files.
Prior to examination, obtains subjective information related to the patient’s perception of health.
Collects necessary information received concerning x-ray and laboratory reports. Data from referring physicians and surgical or other procedure reports for the patient’s files.
Enters medications and drugs administered and any reactions in to the files.
Nursing/Lab Assistance.
Responsible for assisting nursing personnel in the event they may be behind in putting up patients, preparing immunizations/injections or assisting the provider in a procedure.
Cover for a nurse/lab tech in the event they are out.
Maintains supplies.
Is responsible for stocking supplies in exam rooms and assures their cleanliness.
Responsible for letting the designated ordering supply person know when reordering a specific supply is needed.
Clerical/office duties.
Working front desk. Greeting patients and log them in after arriving in the Clinic.
Answers phones.
Filing of Medical Record charts.
Pulling charts for orders and/or appointments.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
Provides services direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.
Interacts with Medical Staff members, family members and staff members of other departments on a continuous basis.
Follows safety guidelines and policy of Limestone Medical Center/Family Medicine Center.
And any other tasks or duties as assigned.
