JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of Laboratory Manager, assists with the obtaining of patient specimens and medical laboratory testing.

OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Personal Job-Related Skills: Ability to learn technical procedures involved in laboratory testing.
  • Licensure, Registry or Certification: Registered Phlebotomist ASCP, AMT.
  • Experience:
  • Prior Work Experience: One year experience in a medical setting preferred.
  • Technical Training: None required.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate periods of sitting and standing, lifting up to 30 pounds.  Must be able to hear equipment alarms and have vision to read labeling, instructions and to conduct tests.  The ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

 

  1. Obtains specimens from patients.

 

1. Under direction of a Laboratory Manager, follows requests for specimen testing as prescribed by physicians.    

 

  2. Draws and processes specimens in compliance with established procedures.    

 

  3. Identifies and labels specimens.    

  4. Collects the appropriate amount of blood by venipuncture or dermal puncture for the specified test and urine sample as required.    

 

 

  5. Selects the appropriate specimen containers for the specified tests.    

 

  6. Appropriately transfers specimens back to the laboratory in a timely manner.    

 

 

  7. Processes specimens for delivery to the appropriate laboratory areas.    

 

  8. Performs computer operations and record keeping pertaining to phlebotomy.    

 

 

  1. As directed and supervised by a Laboratory Manager, performs routine and special medical laboratory tests.

 

1. Follows the established procedures for routine lab tests.    

 

 

2. Follows established procedures when performing chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urine analysis, bacterial cultures, blood bank or serology procedures or tests as limited to moderate complexity of “waived” testing level.    

 

 

 

 

  3. Follows quality control procedures for all tests.    

 

  1. As directed by a Laboratory Manager, prepares tests reports and provides information for permanent records.

 

1. Reviews the accuracy of results with a Laboratory Tech or Manager before reporting.    

 

  2. Records all work completed and provides workload information for records.    

 

 

  1. Performs instrument and equipment maintenance and maintains cleanliness of work areas.

 

1. Under the guidance of a Laboratory Manager, assists with routine and preventative maintenance of instruments and equipment.    

 

 

  2. Reports equipment problems to supervisor.    

  3. Cleans work stations at the end of the shift or when stations are to be unused for extended periods.    

 

 

OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS:

 

A. Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.    

 

  B. Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.

     

  C. Follows procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or when handling potentially infectious materials.

     

  D. Follows the safety guidelines and policies of the Medical Center.   ____
